One Last Page

One last book page for the book project! I would have liked at least another hour on this just to clean it up more and add bits and bobs but I don't have any more time so it'll have to do.

Another Book Page

Another quick page for the book project! I'm trying and trying to get better at putting text into pictures and stuff so this is a bit of practice really! I've cut out all the letters with my cutting machine then stenciled them sort of with paint and scanned them in. I'm slowly getting to grips with it!

Editorial Improvement?

My tutors didn't think my original illustration (bottom picture) worked because it didn't make sense that the hand was pointing which I agreed with, I just used it because it was the only picture I could find in the style I wanted, so I changed it to two hands holding lots of little trophies instead! I thiiiink it's better but we shall see!

Book Project Pages

My DPS and single page for the book project. Slightly worried the second one is a bit Disney-esque..but who doesn't love a bit of Disney? Other than that pretty pleased with these, might try and get another page done if I have time!

DPS Work

Not far off finishing this page now. It's taken some doing still not sure if I'm happy with it though. I'm not sure about the composition? I like parts of it I just feel like it needs something else maybe?

Picture Book WIP

Some work in progress for a DPS of a picture book I'm doing! There is going to be a child hiding behind the sofa but I just can't bring myself to do it yet! It's going to take a lot of time and effort...might be a weekend job. Can't decide whether the text looks better with or without the white behind...hmmmm

Too Scary?

Is this character too scary for a children's picture book?? My instinct's telling me yes BUT the story is about an evil lady who wants to eat a child and ends up eating her own..which is pretty scary! So surely a scary looking character is needed right? I don't know if I've taken it a bit too far. Any feedback would be highly appreciated on this one!

How To Write A Book In 30 Days Editorial

The final editorial illustration! Finally! I've had a love/hate relationship with the editorials. It either goes really right for me or really wrong. I'm happy with this in how it looks but I'm not sure its quite right for the audience it's supposed to be aimed at. It reminds me more of a back to school poster but I'll change it later if I need to.

Pocky Final Piece

So here is my final piece for my Pocky advert! I did actually really enjoy making this and I hope you enjoy looking at it! The main characters and stuff are made out of paper and card and then its all put together and edited on photoshop. Glad its finally done anyway, now to tackle the rest of my mountain of work! Oh and Happy Halloween!

Madness Of Crowds Editorial

Really really struggled with this editorial and I'm not pleased with it at all, but my tutors seemed to like it so I guess that's all that really matters! Just one more of these to go.

Some more Pocky WIP

My advert is slowly getting there! Made these 3 characters yesterday with my new Silhouette Cameo. Very exciting stuff!! A lot quicker and less painful than cutting everything by hand with a little scalpel!

Sun, Sea, Sand...And Sniffles Editorials

So, here are three illustrations for another editorial. My tutors liked 2 of my initial ideas and the top two images are a variations of one and the bottom one is another idea. But I can't decide which one is best. I think I'm leaning towards the first one but any opinions you have are welcome. Here's the article too! It's basically about why people get ill when they go on holiday and stuff like that.

Pocky Advert WIP

Here's some work in progress of an advertising brief we've been given. We have to illustrate an advert for Pocky (Mikado) using a scientist, his assistant and his creature. After talking to a tutor about the above two roughs she said I needed to combine elements of each picture. So I did and came up with the image below! It looks a bit wrinkly because it's done on tracing paper but I'm pleased with it apart from the text at the bottom I need to work on that, its all a bit squashed!

Why Small Victories Matter Editorial

Another editorial piece. I like this one a lot better than my last but I'm still not sure that I've got the hang of editorials. I don't think I think outside the box enough. But practise makes perfect and all that.

A Social Gathering

So.. I think I've finished? I'm at that place where I don't know if I've edited too much, just enough or not enough. But if I carry on will I end up with too much? I think I need to leave it alone for a bit and come back to it later to decide. But this is more or less my final piece. Obviously I had to make life hard for myself on the very first project by making it 3D but I slowly slowly got there. And I am a lot happier with it than I thought I'd be. The composition is a bit off but there's not much I can do about that now unless I dismantle the whole thing...which just might destroy me!

Girl in tree: Cassandra Rhodin
Screaming boy: Oliver Jeffers
Creep behind chair: Edward Gorey
Girl under table: Mary Blair
Other thing under table: Joan Miro
Elephant: Dr Seuss
Drunk old lady: Erte
And the girl in the middle looking scared is supposed to be me.

How To Decorate Editorial

First bit of finished work for 3rd year. An editorial illustration for an article we were given about decorating and how we use it to express our personality. Not 100% happy with it, might need some more tweaking at some point.

A Social Gathering WIP

Just a quick upload of my first project for this year at uni! Eventually there will be lots of little characters in here having a tea party . . . Or at least that's the plan anyway!

Editorial Roughs

These are some roughs of an editorial project we've had to do for 4 different articles. This is the other part of our summer project.

Character Inspired By Cassandra Rhodin

Another one of my characters! This one if you couldn't tell is inspired by Cassandra Rhodin my favourite fashion illustrator. She is really amazing (in my opinion anyway) so if you don't know her I'd definitely recommend checking her work out. Think I might have taken 'in the style of' a bit too literally on this one but I couldn't help it, I love the way she draws. So there we go. My last character. I have another two but not sure if I want to upload them yet. I think they need a bit more work really.

Joan Miro Character: Tip!

A Joan Miro inspired character. Its an alien called Tip who likes trying on women's clothes and make up. I actually really like this one, I'm just a bit concerned it's too simple? My original design was a lot more detailed but after looking back at some more of Joan Miro's work I thought it needed simplifying...and it looked a lot like ET before I changed it too...I like it anyway! Done with acrylic paints.

Edward Gorey Character and Dr Seuss Edit

Another character! This one is inspired by Edward Gorey! Done with pen and ink! Pretty pleased with this one!....Still no good at cross hatching though. And also I decided to change my Dr Seuss character slightly. His legs just didn't look right so I coloured them competely in black and I think it looks much better now.

Oliver Jeffers Style Character

Another one of my characters for the summer project! This one is in the style of Oliver Jeffers. I'm not much of a pro with paint but our tutors want us to try different things and I'm trying my best. I'll be glad when I can get back to my trusty paper and photoshop. I am however pretty pleased with this character. He's called Kek and he's a 10 year old Pharaoh of Ancient Egypt....he's a massive brat.

Done with watercolour paints and pencils.
*Sorry for the bad quality picture I had to take it on the ipad*

Character No.1!

One of my characters for my summer project! This one is based on Dr Seuss...if you couldn't guess. Not sure if I'm taking the brief too literally or not but we have to create characters based on other artists. Hopefully I'm doing it right! Might make his trousers more black later but I'm a little bit terrified of cross-hatching so I haven't dared to do it yet! More is on the way!

If At First You Don't Succeed . . .

So, I didn't manage to make the top 3 of the Illustrate It competition but I'm still really proud of the cover I did for it! And I just want to say a massive massive thank you to everyone that did vote for me! I'm so grateful and I've been overwhelmed by the support I got off friends, family and even strangers. It was a good experience to do something in about 3 days that had nothing to do with uni and I'm glad I did it! Anyway here is my cover, I didn't post it originally because I wasn't sure if I was allowed to publish it anywhere other than the competition website. Thanks again everyone. And hopefully better luck next time! :)

A Loveliness of Ladybirds

Finally I have done something worthwhile with my time! This is based on the phrase 'A Loveliness of Ladybirds' I really loved doing this picture but I think it still needs a little bit of tweaking! And the reason I did this was for a 2nd year book our class at uni is making together we all chose a collective phrase for animals so yeah, this is my attempt.

Year 2 in a Nutshell

Here's a bit of a collection of my work from 2nd year. Not everything's here its just the bits and pieces that I had on my laptop. Definitley 98% happier with my work this year than I was after 1st year! And hopefully next year will be even better. I'll try to keep updating the blog every week or so over summer with any old stuff I do and of course the summer project we've been given if I can ever make a start!

Poscards From Pirates

Here are all the postcards for my children's book DPS! And the last picture is how the actual double page spread will pretty much look! The Hawaii one's a bit scarce but I didn't think it'd matter too much because they're all overlapping on the actual page!

Saturday, 5 May 2012

Wish you were here...Polar Bear

Here's a picture for one of my double page spread's for a children's book project I'm doing. It's going to be a page full of postcard type pictures of my pirate character and his crew visiting different parts of the world! I'm slowly but surely getting there!

Pilot/Collaboration Adult Illustratration

Here's my second illustration for the pilot/collaboration/secret project, this time aimed at adults! I think I am quite happy with this one! The characters at the bottom were a bit rushed but I can always improve that later!
